In a move to support sustainability and tackle waste management challenges, Qatar's Public Works Authority, ‘Ashghal’, has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Al Khalij Cement Company (AKCC), a subsidiary of Qatar Investors Group. The partnership aims to recycle 100% of the sludge produced by Ashghal’s wastewater treatment plants across Qatar.

Over the next five years, the initiative plans to convert an estimated 744,000 to 1.29 million tons of sludge, which was previously viewed as waste, into clean energy. The process aims to not only create energy but also alleviate the environmental burden of sludge disposal by reducing transportation and landfilling, thus cutting carbon emissions.

“The partnership reflects our vision to promote sustainable growth by integrating renewable materials into our operations,” said HE Abdullah bin Nasser Al Misnad, Chairman of Qatar Investors Group. He added that the project aligns with Qatar National Vision 2030 by focusing on carbon emission reductions and the efficient use of natural resources.

The recycling initiative aims to tackle the environmental and economic challenges posed by traditional sludge disposal methods. By converting sludge into alternative fuel, the project will support the reduction of fossil fuel consumption, lower reliance on landfills, and reduce greenhouse gas emissions. The sludge, which has a high organic content, is expected to generate substantial thermal energy.

Ashghal’s commitment to sustainability is also reflected in its broader wastewater management strategy, which includes recycling 98% of treated wastewater for various uses, such as irrigation and landscaping.

The environmental and economic benefits of this agreement include a reduction in greenhouse gas emissions, decreased methane production from landfills, and lower reliance on fossil fuels through the use of biofuels. By converting waste into a valuable energy source, the initiative also offers a cost-effective solution for waste disposal while supporting the transition to a green economy.

In addition, biofuels derived from biomass, including wastewater sludge, are gaining recognition as a sustainable energy alternative. Sludge's high organic content makes it a valuable resource for energy generation, offering significant thermal efficiency during combustion and contributing to the overall reduction of the carbon footprint.
